Measurement of Stratiform Cloud Liquid Water Path from Airborne Microwave Radiometer

内容 研究概要:An estimation procedure of Cloud Liquid Water Path (CLWP) from a dual-frequency microwave radiometer (operational frequency: 23.8GHz and 31.4GHz, Radiometric WVR-1100) aboard an aircraft was developed. The procedure used non-linear regression method between the brightness temperatures of the radiometer and CLWP. The derived CLWP by applying this procedure to the brightness temperatures of stratocumulus cloud over the sea, which were taken by a microwave radiometer aboard an aircraft (Cessna 404 aircraft) over the sea, was compared with those simultaneously measured from another aircraft (Beechcraft B200 aircraft) equipped with the cloud probes, such as Particle Measuring System Inc. (PMS) 1D- and 2D-probes, King's Liquid Water Path (LWC) probe, and Gerber's microphysics probe (PVM-100A). The estimated CLWP of 178g/m^2 by the microwave radiometer reasonably agree with the integrated cloud water contents of 102g/m^2 and 170g/m^2 derived from the integration of liquid water contents given by the sounding measurement using King's LWC probe and Gerber's probe, respectively. The PMS probe, however, showed small CLWP of 21.6g/m^2. The reason of the small CLWP from the PMS probe due to the calibration problem or a size range of this instrument.
