内容 The second series of experiments to get information about the development of child's ability of abstraction in verbal thinking have been recently made by the author by asking 299 children to find similarities among three things, e.g. an apple, an orange and an grape. The age of the 299 subjects range from 6 to 13, of whom 151 are boys and 148 girls. The results are as follows : (1) Conceptual abstraction gains as the age advances. Roughly speaking, first conception gains but second and imperfect conception declines as the child grows older. (2) Pre-conceptual abstraction gains till the age of 8 but declines after that. Conceptual abstraction exceeds pre-conceptual abstraction between the ages of 8 and 9. (3) Perceptual abstraction declines as the child grows older. Pre-conceptual abstraction exceeds perceptual abstraction between 6 and 7, while conceptual abstraction exceeds perceptual abstraction between 8 and 9. (4) Fewer children give wrong answers and no answers as they grow older. (5) These observations may make it legitimate to distinguish three periods in the development of child's ability of abstraction : (a) perceptual period (6 years) (b) pre-conceptual period (7-8 years) (c) conceptual period (over 9 years) (6) A 6-year old child has been found capable of conceptual abstraction, while some of the 13-year old children have proved quite incapable. (7) Compared with the ability of abstraction between two things, the ability of abstraction among three things are characterized by the following things : a. Conceptual abstraction is hastened from infancy. b. Conceptual abstraction increases at every age. c. Pre-conceptual abstraction is hastened in infancy as well. d. Excepting the period of infancy, pre-conceptual abstraction decreases. e. Perceptual abstraction decreases at every age. f. No marked increase of wrong answers and no answers is observed. (8) Contrary to the accepted view, abstraction among three things does not cause any greater difficulty than abstraction between two things. The difficulty of
