A series of studies was made on the sterility of peanut fruits by analysing its occurrence, its process and its environment. It was found in these experiments that the sterility was caused from: 1) failure of ovule fertilization producing non-gynophored and one-seeded cases, 2) destruction of young seeds (unfilled fruit), and 3) insufficient growth of fruits. The failure of ovule fertilization arising from the abnormality of sterileflowers with stigma remaining in staminal-tube or calix-tube, lowering of pollen germination, structural defect of flowers, degeneration of embryo-sac, and few anthers in number. Ovule fertilization failed much in underground flowers, especially, under conditions of thick planting. The destruction of young seeds took place due to calcium deficiency in fruiting zone of plants and this was observed just about 15 days after penetration of gynophore into the soil. This abnormal symptom spread first in the inner part and then gradually in the outer part followed by cell-shrinkage and cell-collapse. There were two types of unfilling of fruits, that is, one- and two-cavity-unfilled fruits. There were also two types of insufficient growth of fruits after fertilization, the one was of the shell and whole ovary checked to grow in various degrees and the other was of insufficient growth of seed (seed immaturity), occurring when the ovule of seeds did not develop completely. In most cases, in the former type, the ovary remained in the stage of gynophore. These various degrees of fruit immaturity occurred from low supply of nutrients to a plant and competition for nutrients among ovules or ovaries, resulting from vigorous growing and flowering of the plants during the fruit development. In these cases, ovules and embryos had no symptoms both in shape and in tissue. From these experiments, it is concluded
